As we settle into winter and shift away from the earlier part of the season, the weather turns from windy and dry to cold and damp. According to Ayurveda, this latter part of the winter and into early spring is the season of Kapha. Kapha is the Ayurvedic dosha made up of earth and water elements, and its qualities are wet, heavy, cold, slow, dull and dense.

Ayurveda teaches us that everything that happens in the macrocosm, happens in the microcosm. This means that all of us, no matter what our doshic dominance, will be effected by this change in season. During the season, the qualities of Kapha that can reveal themselves in our physical, mental, emotional and energetic beings include:

  • More difficulties getting out of bed in the morning
  • A feeling of heaviness or stagnation
  • Lack of energy and motivation
  • Sluggish digestion

Kapha is also a time of year when toxins can remain and accumulate in the body, which can lead to clogged channels and lower immunity, triggering seasonal imbalances such as colds, allergies, fatigue and digestive issues.

As with all things in Ayurveda, we are striving for balance in Kapha season; implementing practices that bring in opposing qualities will help to achieve this balance. As a general rule, to avoid imbalances and invigorate the mind, body and energy, we recommend incorporating the qualities of Vata and Pitta to support you during this time of year. Kapha balancing qualities include:

  • Dryness
  • Lightness and clarity
  • Warmth
  • Invigoration

It’s important to remember though that not all individuals are dealing with the same dosha or imbalances. For more individualized support book an Ayurvedic Assessment with us to identify your dosha and imbalances, and to receive a protocol regimen designed specifically for you.

Over the coming months, we will continue to dive into the season and help guide you on how to thrive in Kapha.
